Jaganath Reddy is the landlord of the Village. His son is Pratap Reddy. They are Zamindars for the forty neighboring villages and own two thousand acres of land. They indulge in all types of oppression. Bheemaiah and Durgaiah, two henchman of the Zamindar were law unto themselves acting as mercenaries in dealing violently with the people.

Hardly had the bride of Ramulu stepped into her new home, late in the evening was taken away to the landlord's fort and raped. Papi Reddy, son of poor peasant Rami Reddy challenged the authority of the village Patwari who tried to evict from their land. Jaganath Reddy enraged by the incident orders Mastan, Police Patel to punish them. Mastan catches the Papi Reddy brothers and parade them in the village streets on Donkey backs with their heads shaven. Nagaiah a shepherd suggests that in order to resist the oppression and atrocities they would have to see the help and support of the Sangham.

Ramaiah is in love with Chandev, daughter of Bhagya Naik an elder of the Lambada Village tribe living on the outskirts of the village. Chandevi was summoned to the fort, which could not avoid. On learning this Ramaiah went into rage, disappointed and disgusted Ramaiah leaves the village.

Ramaiah lands in Suryapet. There he works for the merchant Guravaiah. He sees a different kind of life there. He gets acquainted with Venkaiah a drunkard and vagabond. The merchant's wife Vajramma tries to seduce him. On not yielding she seeks the revenge on him. Out of the sheer disgust he gives up the job. That night Venkaiah forces Ramiah into heavy drinking and takes him to a prostitute. Ramaiah leaves Suryapet.

Ramaiah lands in Hyderabad and seeks out living as a Rickshaw pullar. One day he meets Maqbool a trade union leader. Due to ill health he leaves the rickshaw and joins in a factory, with the help of Maqbool he learns to read and write and become politically aware. With the strike n the factory he gets arrested and thrown into the prison where he meets Veeraiah who informs about the changed attitude of the people in the village against the landlords.

On release from the jail Ramaiah meets Maqbool to tell him of his intention to go back to the village. Maqbool appreciates the move; give him some guidelines and a letter addressed to Yellareddy, Sangham leader in the village Allipuram.

Ramaiah reaches Allipuram only to find the whole village turned into vertile graveyard and finds out that Yella Reddy dead in his house. He learns that the raid on the villages is of the Razakars and police.

Ramaiah joins in Sangham and with the help of the villagers attack the fort and captures it, burns the promissory notes and distributes the land to the peasants. The youth were trained in the guerilla warfare.

Though we get the independence the Nizam refuses to surrender to the Indian government. The Razakars and police raid the villages, after 13th Sept 1948 Govt, launches the police action and in the end Ramaiah gets killed in guerilla warfare with the Indian army.

About the film :
Maa Bhoomi is classic in every sense. It is not only of the greatest Telugu films ever made but also the best artistic film. Based on the Telangana armed struggle, the revolt against the dreaded Rajakars, Maa Bhoomi was directed by then debutant Gowtham Ghose – now an accomplished director and cinematographer.

The film is also remarkable for its honest filmmaking style – a very rare at the time of the film made in Telugu, as most of the films that were being made at that time were mindless masala films with big bellied old heroes in their 50’s singing and dancing with teenage sex bombs.

Telangana armed struggle is considered to be the greatest ‘freedom struggle’ that India has ever witnessed. The theme is inspiring, and the execution by Gautham Ghose and all the crew by terrific. He had captured heroic peasant struggle of Telengana and the oppressive feudalism of the Rajakars or Doras of the Nizam state.

B Narsing Rao, a young painter then and Ravindranath were the two enthusiastic film buffs. They were so inspired by the Krishan Chandra's famous Urdu novel Jab Khet Jaage (1948) that they dreamt of making this novel into a film. Within no time they had gathered the resources to make the film and approached documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Gautam Ghose to direct it.

The young man brimming with ideas that he was, Ghose spent months on the script – researching the Telangana villages, their way of life, and language. In fact Gautam and his wife, who costume designed for the film, spent close to two months in the villages to get the first hand info.

Perhaps, that explains the quintessential and true to portrayal of Telangana Ghadis in the film. And till date, it is the only film that captured the Telangana slang on screen perfect.Narsing and Mukhya Pran Rao have helped the Gautam in this matter.

Trivia:
The film could not get buyers initially. Finally it was distributed by Laxmi films and Sree Tarakarama films. It was released in 1980. In Hyderabad, the film was released in Sudarshan 35 mm but trade pundits were skeptic about the film’s success. But it proved them wrong and went to become sensational hit at the box office and also received critical acclaim.
