awesome retrospect on a awesome movie. this movie will stay in my mind as the one of the greatest movies muscially and visually.

hats off to the great team. this movie would not be what it is even if one person from the team was not there....mani, raaja, veturi, pc sreeram and sundaram, rajasri everyone's work was absolute gem.

Can we again get a movie like geetanjali in these times? never!!!

Brings back all my childhood memories. Still rememebr those long serpentine queues at Devi theatre in Hyd. Quite an amazing theatre.

Still remember those long serpentine queues at Devi theatre in Hyd. Quite an amazing theatre.

Gharshana, Geetanajili, and Shiva - Golden Period for Devi theatre. All time classics!! Great direction, great camera work, extraordinary music Ilayaraja. Great experience at this theatre.

I thought these 3 movies would completely change the future of telugu movies but alas they didn't. The rest of the filmmakers just couldn't meet the high standards set by these movies due to lack of talent or whatever.

NaChaki/Sri,
Was the herione's voice really dubbed by SP Sailaja? We thought it was Rohini (actor Raghuvaran's wife).

dear sri,
in reference to your response given to mr. rick.
i think you have got it wrong.it simply doesn't make sense to state that the facts written in your article are true, becoz some one has certified it.(it mite b the producer).the producer or the film mite b too old to recall the fine efforts that were put in.one can easily recognize, it was rohini who dubbed for girija in that film and it is as sure as a tide.you d' better watch it once and justify your response.i must say that the article was very well written and thanks a ton for that.

About dubbing for Girija:

I personally think, Narasa Reddy gaari statement or not, that Girija's voice was dubbed by S.P. Sailaja. I never thought it was someone else, in fact - such is the mark in her voice! In some scenes particularly, it's very clear that it's Sailaja.

I think Girijas dubbing was by Rohini garu(Raghuvaran's ex-wife) and not SP sailaja

i just checked in youtube for Girijas voice in the movie but the dialogue was not clearly audible(also i am in office so i cannot increase the volume :))
i still somehow feel its not sailaja
sailaja gari has more shriek

Sri / nachiki,

Excellent article. I love the retrospect site from your site. I was wondering if you could write one on some of the amazing movies made by K. Viswanath (especially my all time favorite sagara sangamam).

Excellent article otherwise and I was reading the article I kept going back into the 80s and my teens and I could see the movie in front of my eyes.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

Nice movie I ever seen!

Those were the days whan I was in +2 and used to queue at buspass counters in Wgl.

Clerk used to collect all the passes from the queue and call by name to return it. Not to mention how funny it was to hear the comments from boys when ever there was a girl by name 'Girija'.

Some even used to say - 'Geethakka' nee pass vachchindi!!

Its been a nice memory for ever!

Thanks to Nag and Mani.

Thanks TC for bringing out such a beautiful movie!!

Lot of hardwork involves in creating a great movie. That pays off when the film becomes hit...

Also lot of hardwork involves in collecting this kind of data..for retrospects...My heartful thanks to TC for these details which really remembers me of those childhood days where there was lot of fascination for me towards movies.

If you watch this movie on DVD or any channel, in the title credits, you will find the names of Velu, Disco Santi, Pradeep Sakthi and Chandra Mohan. But none of them appear in the movie. This is because when the movie was first released there is a comdey track involving these people (most probably it was directed by some one other than Mani Ratnam and added to the movie because the producer feared that audience could not digest a serious movie without a dose of comedy). The track was so bad and diluted the impact of the movie so much that it was removed after a couple of weeks, and it is now lost forever.

hi rambo
why do you think maniratnam didnt direct those scenes that involves chandramohan , velu nad co.if you watch gharsana , you will find no. of scenes (comedy track involving an old man, his assitanat and a call girl) that were pretty much similar to scenes in geetanjali in terms of vulgarity or obsceneity. with due respect to mani, i must say he is not a noble saint.

Gitanjali is a 100% Directors film. With almost an invisible story line (Can some body narrate the story of this film in at least 5/6 lines? when I asked this question to my cousin when she came watching the film she paused for 5 minutes thinking. Then she said iddaru untaru . valliddaroo, chava bothuntaru, kanee mallee untaru such is the story of this film. The base line is very philosophical and is excellently transformed in to celluloid by director who filled it with beautiful visuals .
This is one of the films which goes against the standard belief in industry that a good story is essential for success of a film.
This film shows that the narration is more important than the story.
This fact is also proved by our experience of very popular telugu novels( great stories) getting messed up when they are made in to films ( Example Girija kalyanam)

churning out old memories, drinking old wine ,spending time with old friends are few of the most entertaining moments of life. thanks for tc people for bringing one of those to us.
i cant imagine this entire extravaganza was shot in 2 months with 1.2 crores.now a days each director is taking 1-2 yrs.& spending 15-20 crores to bring out an average fare or a damp squib[some are super hits though].
i can still recollect my movie watching experience in manga theatre 20 yrs back & watching it another 9 times on video & recently in dvd, total 12 times.it is a heart touching movie.
kudos to tc.com & especially atluri garu for the excellent work.
