Sri Gumuluri Sastry was born Sri Gummaluri Satyannarayana in Godavari Dist. He came to USA in 1965 and did his Master of Science (Astrophysics) in Connecticut and did Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He did his M.Sc from Osmania University and worked as a lecturer there, before coming to the USA. After five years in teaching profession in USA he switched to engineering and became a Noise and Vibration Specialist for Washington metro. 

He along with Meer Abdulla produced the Movie Padamata Sandhya Ragam under the direction of Jandhyala with Vijayashanthi and Tom. He also acted as her father in the film. The film was a commerical sucess. After long gap he directed the film Atu-America Itu India which won a Nandi award but failed at BO.

He along with Meer Abdulla was planning to do the sequel to Padamati Sandhyaragam called Maro Sandhyaragam.

He passed away on Monday night (Nov 24, 2008) in his sleep. He is survived by a wife Kanakadurga and daughter. He has two grand children.
