Veteran actress Vyjayanthimala will be awarded with ANR award for year 2008. This prestigious award instituted by Akkineni International Foundation was anounced today (November 29, 2008) at Annapoorna Studios. Akkineni Nageshwar Rao said that Vyjayanthimala is an actress par excellance.
“She also contributed to the growth of Indian cinema and she is also regarded for the renaissance of Bharatanatyam,” he lauded. The award consisting of a memonto and cash prize of Rs 4 Lakhs will be awarded to her at a special ceremony to be held on January 10, 2009 at Public Gardens, Hyderabad.
Vyjayanthimala was born on August 13, 1936, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. And has acted in more than 60 films as leading actress. An accomplished classical dancer, she made her debut in a Tamil film Vazhaki but she shot to fame with her Nagin dance in Nagin (Hindi) in 1954. Later her films with Dilip Kumar became rage. She first acted with him as Chandramukhi in Devadas that was received well by the audiences. Madhumati, Ganga Jamuna, Leader followed. She stopped acting in films after her marriage with Raj Kapoor's personal physician, Dr. Chamanlal Bali.
