| Sumanth in Boni |
For the first time, Sumanth has taken a long gap to come up with a film after his previous release. He realizes that this could have been avoided and promises that he would be more careful now. But he is gung ho about his current movie,
Boni, that is releasing this weekend as he believes that the movie will pave way to newer story ideas in Telugu within the commercial setup. Here he talks about the film, his career, and his personal life.
Let’s begin with
Boni. What’s the film all about?
First of all,
Boni is not a film that completely treads the new path but it certainly is a new kind of flick with an interesting storyline. We tried to make it as realistic as we could do within the commercial setup. I was surprised when the story was narrated as I felt it is tough to make this kind of film but we successfully completed. It is a lovestory with an action backdrop but action is not shown in subtle way. There is a ‘new angle’ in this film that would surprise everyone.
Why this title ‘Boni’ and also the posters depict Tamarind seeds. Why is that show?
You could understand the reason why we used
Boni as the title when you see the film. When our producer Ramana Gogula told about this title, I was like, "what? What’s this name." But it is interlinked with the theme of the movie and the Tamarind seeds have a role to play in the flick. So we used them in the posters.
Tell us about the new director Raj Pippala..
Raj Pippala is basically from Bhimavaram but he did his stint in ad films and films abroad. He just moved to India to make films. He is very passionate about flicks. I brought western style of filmmaking to the Telugu sensibilities in this film.
What do you do in the flick?
I am an orphan and part of mafia. He meets the heroine and from then on wards their journey in life takes turnaround.
How was it working with Ramana Gogula as producer?
Ramana Gogula is one music director that I like immensely. Right from his Premante Idera days, I am his fan. He brought freshness to the Telugu music, so when he approached for this film, I knew that he comes up with newer ideas in stories too. I liked his understanding of the films. He was also an entrepreneur before he stepped into films, so as producer, he is like a professional and knows business aspects perfectly. I am happy with him as producer as well as music director. In
Boni, all songs sound differently. Today songs have become chartbusters just because of the novel sound.
The film took a long time to complete. What was the reason of it?
Yes, I agree. As I said earlier, this film is a tough one to finish. Also, it took time for adjust to the working styles of NRI Raj Pippala and he coming to terms with our culture. Also we exceeded our budget, and there were some problems but we all believed in the movie and finished it.

Don’t you think these long-gaps don’t do well for your career?
Yes, I agree but it was not planned as such, it just happened. I will do two films a year from now onwards.
What kind of movies you intend to do at this stage of your career?
I think it is the time that we move towards realistic cinema and approach for newer themes. I recently liked
Dev D in Hindi, I believe we can do such kind of films. Not losing the commercial ingredients, we can do better movies with better scripts than this formulaic films. I am looking for such scripts.
Your Annapoorna Studios and your very own SS Creations is known for introducing maverick directors like Ram Gopal Varma and also produced some good movies like Jaitra Yatra, Ninne Pelladutha, in the past. But in the recent times, we hardly find any such good talent coming from your banners.
See, directors like Ram Gopal Varma come only once in a lifetime. It is not that we are not meeting new directors and listening them but we hardly find such great talent. Even now, my uncle Nag and my sister Supriya are constantly meeting the younger directors and writers.
How do you face competition from home turf in the form of Sushanth, Naga Chaitanya?
There is no competition as such among us. For every four or five years, new heroes come and it is very natural. Each one will have their space here. I am sure that Sushanth and Naga Chaitanya from our family will also make bright career. They have talent and will definitely have long career.
Is there any chance of working with them?
As of now, we don’t have any plans. Let them establish their own careers. If we get some good scripts that have scope to work with them, I am game for it.
Why it that you hardly seen in film functions and in media happenings other than when your movie releases. Why are you so reclusive?
I am not that so reclusive as you are making out. If there is one guy in Tollywood who so is reclusive it is ought to be Mahesh Babu. No one can beat him on that front. Well, I don’t come to film functions or any thing because I believe that stars should not expose frequently. If we were seen in media and public life daily, why would audiences take interest in us? Apart from that I have very limited friends and I do interact with them.
You also not that freely interact with media?
I may look like standoffish guy but I am not.
Will you turn producer on your own?
I have plans of producing good, qualitative movies but everything will be done on our respective banners.
There is a rumor that you are going to get married this year with some NRI girl?
I read the same gossip on the websites but they are not true. I am not marrying anyone.
What’s happening on personal front?
I tell you, if there is really happening something, I will share with you guys. I won’t hide my marriage. As of now, I am single. Don’t believe such rumors.
