Mallemaala Sundara Rami Reddy (87), popularly known as M.S. Reddy, who produced several blockbusters and wrote numerous hit songs, passed away on Sunday morning (Dec 11, 2011) at his Film Nagar residence in Hyderabad, after suffering prolonged illness.
Born in 1925 in Aliviri village in Nellore district, he turned producer with Shoban Babu starrer
Bharya (1968) on Kaumudi Pictures banner and later made films like
Srikrishna Vijayam (1971) with NTR,
Kodenaagu (Shoban Babu-starrer, 1974),
Mutayala Pallaki (1977, starring Narayana Rao and Jayasudha), and with Krishna he made films like
Eklavya (1982) and
Palnati Simham (1985). Films like
Aahuthi (1987),
Ankusham (1989) and
Ramayanam (marking the debut of NTR Jr., 1997) brought him good name. He also acted in role of a Chief Minister in Rajasekhar-starrer
Ankusham.
His son Shyam Prasad Reddy is a leading producer now, heading the production house M.S. Arts and continuing the legacy of Sree M.S. Reddy with high-production-value films including
Ankusham (1989),
Aagraham (1991),
Ammoru (1995),
Anji (2004), and the more recent
Arundhati (2009). M.S. Reddy wrote several hit numbers on his pen name Mallemaala.
His recent autobiography
idii naa katha created huge controversy.
