Telugu Cinema Box-office: 2020 first quarter report

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, all film shootings have stopped. There has been no activity from the last two weeks. In fact, the Telugu film industry has witnessed business just for two months in the first quarter of 2020. March was a complete zero.

Take a look at films that made money…

1. Ala Vaikunthapurramloo

Surprising trade pundits, Allu Arjun’s ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramloo’ emerged as the all-time second biggest hit in Tollywood’s history. It now stands second only to the mighty ‘Baahubali 2’. Directed by Trivikram, this family entertainer was lapped up by all sections of audiences. Simple entertainment, absolutely superb songs composed by Thaman and the hiked ticket prices for two weeks have helped the film to rake in such huge money. This is the first movie in Allu Arjun’s career that clicked big time in overseas.

According to trade analysts, the family drama has collected a whopping Rs 163 crore worldwide.

2. Sarileru Neekevvaru

Despite stiff competition from ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramloo’, Mahesh Babu’s ‘Sarileru Neekevvaru’ set the box-office on fire. The film collected big money on the domestic front but has failed to bring in money in the overseas market, which is considered Mahesh Babu’s citadel. Directed by Anil Ravipudi, this regular masala film, however, has become one of all-time biggest blockbusters in Tollywood and the number one hit in Mahesh Babu’s career.

As per trade pundits, the film’s total worldwide share stands at Rs 138 crore.

3. Bheeshma

Nithin returned to the path of success this year after going through a lean phase. ‘Bheeshma’ brought him the much-needed success. The romantic comedy starring Nithin and Rashmika is the third biggest hit this year so far. At one time, the film seemed to touch the Rs 40 crore mark but it saw a steep drop in the collections after the first week. However, it brought profits to all distributors.

‘Bheeshma’ has raked in about Rs 27 crore worldwide.

4. HIT On the last day of February, Vishwak Sen’s ‘HIT’ hit the screens and it won fairly good reviews. However, the film didn’t become a huge money-spinner. It recovered its costs and brought slender profits.

The thriller has collected about Rs 6 Crore.

A dubbed movie ‘Kanulu Kanulu Dochayante’ starring Dulqer Salmaan won good reviews and also broke even.

In the first three months of 2020, many prominent movies bombed in a big way. They are Ravi Teja’s ‘Disco Raja’, Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘World Famous Lover’, Samantha and Sharwanand’s ‘Jaanu’, Rajinikanth’s ‘Darbar’ and Kalyan Ram’s ‘Entha Manchivaadavuraa’.
