Tollywood going back!

Tollywood is showing flashes of intelligence these days. As part of its new journey, it is making an increasing number of period films which are set in the 1980s and 1990s. Sukumar opened the vistas by making 'Rangasthalam', which was set in the year 1985.

Director Sudheer Varma is currently making a semi period film with actor Sharwanand in the lead role.  It's partly set in the 1990s against the backdrop of coastal Kakinada. Sharwa's flashback episodes are set in this era. The rest of the movie will be set in the contemporary era.

Another interesting period drama in the making is Rajasekhar’s 'Kalki', which is set in the 1980s against the backdrop of rural Telangana. An investigative thriller, this one unfolds in the year when Indian cricket team won the World Cup for the first time in history.

Then we have 'Majili', starring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha. Major portions of the movie are set in the Vizag of 1990s. Shiva Nirvana must be knowing that period aspect will lend quality to his love story.

The remake of the Tamil hit '96', as the title indicates, is set in the year 1996. Sharwanand is the hero of this remake.

Above all, Prabhas's film with KK Radhakrishna Kumar is a period romance set in the 1970s Europe. The film has Pooja Hegde playing the female lead. Major part of this movie was recently shot in Italy.
